Archdiocese
of Boston Archives Closing During Relocation
Due to
the relocation of the Archdiocese of Boston to Braintree, the Archives will
close and suspend research service beginning September 3, 2007 (Labor Day). The
Archives will remain closed until it is fully relocated to its new site in
Braintree (date to be announced – anticipated re-opening in Fall 2008).
Genealogical and historical requests received after September 3, 2007 will not
be answered until Fall 2008. It is the intent of the Archives to answer as many
requests as possible that are received prior to September 3, 2007 - before our
move to Braintree. In-house researchers will be accommodated as time and space
permits until Dec. 31, 2007, at which time the Archives will be closed to all
researchers. (Appointments to the Archives are required for admittance).
Please
call and schedule one to two weeks in advance (space is limited).
Appointments: Tuesdays & Thursdays 10-4. The Archives will make every effort to
continue providing service to Archdiocesan Administrative Staff, Parishes, and
individuals needing records for official civil and/or official religious reasons
during the closure (i.e. Baptismal certificates required for purposes of
Marriage or annulments, etc.). The Archives appreciates your understanding,
cooperation, and patience during this time.

Ancestry [http://www.ancestry.com] has added a new
resource to their website: Massachusetts Death Index, 1970 to 1998. The
website notes that "This information was originally accessed from the
Massachusetts State Health Department." The index includes: death Certificate
Number, Death Place, Surname, Given Name, Date of death, and Birthplace. However
the birthplaces given in the index are wrong, Everyone appears to have been born
in Becket or Fitchburg. Nevertheless, there is a good search feature. You may
search by Firstname, Lastname, Keyword ( or a combination of these categories)
with exact or soundex spelling.
